The Image as an Event

Collective painting, live decision-making, and artwork deconstruction | Julián Rodríguez Vigo

Concept & Visual Narrative

For a single day, the gallery turns into a studio, a stage for painterly action and narrative building. Challenging the logic of the ready-made object, this piece unfolds over time: it is born, transforms, and splits right before our eyes. What we see is not merely the outcome, but the trace of a process that starts on a blank canvas and finishes with six autonomous fragments, tied together by an invisible story.

The artwork takes shape through a continuous gesture, a form of uninterrupted visual writing. Once complete, the overall image is divided. Cutting it is not an act of destruction, but a choice in how it is read. Each piece carries its own rhythm, like a chapter, yet its full meaning comes alive in the sequence.

Viewers are invited to walk through these six canvases, moving between them to discover the narrative connecting them. There is no single way to read the story: the narrative isn't predefined; it builds itself through fragments, silences, and overlaps.

Dividing the artwork is not a break, but a deliberate strategy to view the image as something expanded and dispersed—requiring time, presence, and perspective to become whole. Art here is not a static object, but an open-ended action. Like an unbound book, a divided scene, a whole that chooses to remain open.
